SPEAKER_02

Welcome back to our special Young Gunner series with the 2026-2027 TYLA president-elect candidates. Today's episode is all about the person behind the leadership journey. What the candidates hope young lawyers understand about them with their impressive careers and TYLA service.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, so um just we've had this opportunity to get to know both of you so much better. Um, and our audience listeners, they they're getting to know you better through all of these episodes. So, what is something you want young lawyers to know about you beyond your careers and your TYLA leadership journeys? We'll start with Claire.

SPEAKER_03

I would want young lawyers to know that like them, um myself, we there's so much more to us than just being a lawyer, like as a whole person, hobbies, families, what we care about, what drives us. Um I love my family. I love being outside, I love hunting, fishing, playing tennis, uh, spending time with people, that there's something that can make us all relate to one another. Um and I can find common ground with anyone. And I look forward to the chance to finding that common ground with someone. And so my phone number is on my brochures for a reason because um I like to think I've never met a stranger and would welcome any call from anyone across the state.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you, Claire. Uh over to you, Dave. Um, what is just something interesting or uh anything about you that you want young lawyers to know about you that's outside of your career or your TYLA journey?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, what I what I think I would want young lawyers to know about me uh that's outside of my practice and my work with TYLA is the reason I'm so committed to uh mental health substance abuse and attorney well-being um is because I've lived it. And I especially want the young lawyers out there who are struggling with those issues uh to know that it's important to me because I I've been there. Uh I've been sober since uh April 27th, 2019. Uh, so going on, um, it'll be seven years this April. Uh and it has been, you know, it has been it's added a whole other dimension of struggle to uh my life as a practicing lawyer. Um and at times it's not easy, but it it's something that I have become a better person because of, uh, and that uh I'm in a better place, and uh it's something I'm extremely grateful for. Um and so that's what I would want young lawyers to know is that uh this issue's real to me, and uh you know, uh struggling uh with those issues uh it uh it gets better. You you it's not the end of uh uh you know everything. You you there's light at the end of the tunnel, and um uh I'm living proof. So uh that's what I would want the uh young lawyers to know about me outside of work and uh TYLA stuff.
